Rather than having to use the default "Alert" tone, I would like to choose a custom tone that is ONLY for the Dropcam alerts!
I liken this to the ESPN Score Center app.... For those that haven't used the app, the alert for it is the clearly identifiable ESPN tone that plays at a good volume. Not only is the volume high enough to be heard in a pocket or purse, but with the uniqueness of the ESPN I know the subject of the alery without even looking that the phone. I'd love to see drop cam use a similar approach, it would sure prevent missing an important security alert.
I just logged into this forum to create a feature request for this. Glad to see I'm not the only one who is actively interested in it.
This could be an easy feature to implement, but SO USEFUL. I keep getting many push notifications on my iDevices, and being able to immediately sense a possible thief would be REALLY IMPORTANT.
Like happened this august... I was SAVED by my dropcam, seeing the thieves in real time at 1:20am at 600km distance... Luckily I was still not sleeping and could notice the push notifications on my two iPhones/iPads... but during the day it would have been somewhat impossible.
I would like to change the alert sound on my iphone, because the i can not hear the standard. i think it's a simple way to sell many dropcam to me and my neighbors. thanks
Please consider this enhancement as a matter of urgency. I captured two thieves on my dropcam had they not also tried to get into the house a set up the house alarm waking me up I would have not known about this until morning when i saw the push notification. One other thing notification has override the night time option and set an alarm off on the ios device so It can walk someone up.
I want to be able to choose a notification sound that is louder and longer so that it corresponds with the urgency and immediacy of action needed when someone is breaking into your house. Some distinction between ordinary texts and urgent alerts is imperative.
I just purchased our first dropcam last night for a baby monitor and so far have loved it. After a night of using it and seeing its strengths and weaknesses, I'm shocked and concerned that this particular request hasn't been address yet. This is a no-brainer and the lack of implementation after 2 years of customer requests does not bode well. :/
I totally agree. I bought these cameras for intruder notification when we are traveling. The present tone is not distinctive enough or loud enough to reliably alert us to motion in the house . This deficiency makes using Dropcam for security purposes almost useless.
Whats taking so long!!
I just purchased my first Dropcam Pro for home security purposes. My intent was to purchase a few more after feeling the first one out. However the default notification sound on my iPhone is not nearly loud enough to wake me up when needed. I may need to explore other home security options. More notification sound options would be great.
Since buying my first Dropcam, I've been looking for a solution for an audible alarm when motion is detected. The current IOS default alert is definitely not an option to wake someone up at night. Since the Nest Protect communicates with Dropcam to record, I'm curious why the Nest Protect isn't set up with an option to sound when motion is detected? I would buy more Dropcams and a Nest Protect if so...
@jeremy: Yep - a common (and critical) feature request, but one which the company doesn't appear to be interested in addressing. See: http://support.dropcam.com/entries/25028572
Not just people who want louder alerts care about this. There are dozens of user scenarios where a custom ringtone makes the product better.
For me, I get alerts when someone enters my barn. Most of these alerts don't matter to me, since I know there are people working. I could turn off notifications, but at other times, I care very much if there is motion in the barn. So, now I get alerted in the same way as an SMS or other important app, and need to check to see if it's an SMS or a Dropcam motion alert. If Dropcam just had the (very normal, easy SDK, standard) android and iOS app function of specifying a custom ringtone, my problem could be basically solved. I could ignore the dropcam ringtone when I don't care, and investigate when I care.
Geez. Do it now for Android and iOS.
With all the marketing and now Nest , you would think they would add a alert tone. Whats the point in alerts, and recording, if the alert blends in with all the other everyday sounds. Maybe we (clients) should warn other prospective users it really does not warn with a specific alert tone.
I am shocked I paid $200 for a camera/app and this feature isn't standard. Especially since it is also marketed as a nursery camera! After doing a quick search I noticed this feature has been suggested multiple times since at least 2012. It's been 3 years! There is no reason this shouldn't be an option. In the mean time, you should be transparent about the app and let people know prior to buying that they are not able to change the alert tone. I am the admin of a mother's group with over 800 members. Many are looking for new cameras for their new nurseries and so far many of them have turned away from purchasing your camera due to the lack of customizable features such as this (as well as text alerts). I love the idea of this whole thing, but it's definitely lacking in some areas that seem crucial.
Yeah, MJC, it's crazy. You run a mom's group that could benefit form this feature, while I have been in the telecoms and mobile app development industry for 16 years. Yeah, 16. You will be additionally saddened by how easy it is for an app developer like Dropcam to add custom notification tones. Here's the page in the Apple Developer's Guide
I mean, c'mon! Dropcam doesn't even need to figure it out, they just need to use the functions Apple iOS offers to apps. Just see the last two paragraphs there.
And below is a link to the Apple developer's library, WHICH EVEN GIVES THE SPECIFIC CODE YOU NEED TO WRITE INTO YOUR APP to enable a custom tone:
I myself an am an Android user. It's just as easy to code on a custom tone on that platform, and let's not forget that Dropcam is owned by Nest which is owned by Google which owns Android i.e. it's the same company, for crying out loud.
Well, I just put my complaint on my LinkedIn, with about 5000 contacts in the telecom industry.
