How do I setup my new camera?

Sometimes, all you need is a little extra help. Here are detailed instructions on setting up Dropcam using USB (or watch a step-by-step video). 

  1. Connect your camera.

  2. Open the setup flow.

  3. Follow the on screen instructions.

  Connect the camera to your computer's USB port.

The camera's status light will blink yellow.

  1. Bend the base so it is in a standing position.

  2. Remove the camera from its base.

  3. Locate the micro USB port on the bottom side of the camera.

  4. Plug micro USB cable into this port.

  5. Place the camera back into its base.

Plug micro USB into your camera

  1. Locate the USB port on your computer or laptop.

  2. Plug the USB cable into your computer's USB port.

Windows 7 & Vista

To set up your camera on a Windows machine, you will need to sign in as an admin.

  1. Select the Windows Start Menu icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.

  2. Select "Computer" ("My Computer" on Vista) from the list of options in the right hand column of the Start Menu window.

  3. Double click the "Dropcam Setup" option.

  4. Double click the "Setup Dropcam (Windows)" icon to launch Dropcam's setup in your browser.

  5. Proceed to Step 3.

Windows XP

To set up your camera on a Windows machine, you will need to sign in as an admin.

  1. Select the Windows Start Menu icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.

  2. Select "My Computer" from the list of options in the right hand column of the Start Menu window.

  3. Double click the "Dropcam Setup" option.

  4. Double click the "Setup Dropcam (Windows)" icon to launch Dropcam's setup in your browser.

  5. Proceed to Step 3.

Mac

Navigate to your Desktop

  1. Click "Finder" in the upper left-hand corner of your screen.

  2. Select the option to "Hide Others" from the dropdown menu.

    • This will cause all open screens to collapse so you will only see your Desktop.

  3. Find the Dropcam icon setup-icon.png that appears on your Desktop.

  4. Double click the icon and then double click the "Setup Dropcam (Macintosh)" icon to launch Dropcam's setup in your browser.

  5. Proceed to Step 3.

Not seeing setup-icon.png on your desktop? Launch setup through Finder.

  1. Locate the Finder icon in your Dock.

  2. Select "Dropcam" from the "Devices" category in the Finder's window sidebar.

  3. Double click the "Set up Dropcam (Macintosh)" icon to launch Dropcam's setup in your browser.

  4. Proceed to Step 3.

  Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.

Important: Please do not unplug your camera from your computer until prompted.

  1. Create your Dropcam account (or log into an existing account).

  2. Connect your Dropcam to Wi-Fi

    • Dropcam will automatically detect all the available Wi-Fi networks it can connect to. You will need to know your Wi-Fi network name and password to set up Dropcam. If you do not know the name of your Wi-Fi network or its password, please contact your Internet Service Provider.

    • Get extra help connecting to Wi-Fi

  3. Place your camera where you would like.

  4. Give your camera a name.
